This August Quarterly II edition coincides with the annual numismatic migration to the ANA World’s Fair of Money. The Quarterly II is one of our personal favorites as the series covered here span half dollars to $3 gold-an ideal cross-section of both collector and investor-grade coins. There are a few more minus signs on the sheet this issue than in the past which had seen reliable gains. This is the result of our analysis of recent auction results which shows a bit of softness in some of the issues we represent here. Additionally, we are still seeing grading pressure on prices. Even better date coins are not immune from gradeflation, and we’re seeing coins appear in auction that were formerly in a lower-grade holder. Sometimes, the same exact coin in a higher grade holder sells for a lower result than it did when it was more accurately represented.

Both Heritage and Stack’s Bowers are holding major auctions in conjunction with the ANA show this year, and the Stack’s offering of the famous Lord St. Oswald/Norweb 1794 dollar, graded PCGS/ CAC MS64 is a major highlight. This and many other exciting coins should make the annual ANA extravaganza even more tantalizing.
