Legend Rare Coin Auctions will be hosting its 26th Regency Auction May 16-17, 2018 at the PCGS Members’ Show at Harrah’s in New Orleans, and it promises to be the “largest and most impressive” auction the firm has ever hosted. Among the upcoming features for this unprecedented two-day Regency Auction event are 855 lots ranging across various series and periods. Also on the roster is a special “Silver Dollar Day” featuring exceptional selections from the P.F.M. Collection of Morgan Dollars, Crow River Peace Dollar Collection, and Aurora Borealis Collection; the Aurora Borealis Collection is an apt name for its variety of beautifully toned Morgan dollars representing virtually every hue of the rainbow.
“The P.F.M. Collection is the current #6 on the PCGS Registry and features many exceptional gen-quality coins,” says Julie Abrams, the firm’s president. She continues, “and some are pedigreed to the great Morgan dollar collections like Jack Lee and Coronet. The Crow River Collection was assembled by the same collector who put together the record-shattering set of $10 Indians that Legend Auctions sold last October.”
The lot roster for the Silver Dollar Day marquee reads like a “Who’s Who” of scarce Morgan and Peace dollars. These include a tantalizing array of key-date and condition-rarity Morgan dollars from the P.F.M. Collection that include the 1879-CC PCGS MS65, 1884-S PCGS MS63, 1889-CC PCGS MS63, 1891-O PCGS/CAC MS65DMPL, 1892-S PCGS MS65, 1893-S PCGS AU58, and 1904-O PCGS/CAC MS67. A sampling of Peace dollars from the Crow River Collection includes a 1927-D PCGS/CAC MS66 and 1934-S PCGS/CAC MS66.
While many folks are eagerly chatting about Silver Dollar Day on Wednesday, May 16, there are plenty of exciting lots crossing the block at the Regency Auction on Thursday, May 17. These offerings run the gamut from early copper to pre-1933 gold and more. The Premier Barber Collection, duplicates from a wealthy Legend Numismatics collector, features high-end proof dimes and mint state quarters. Also on tap are proof Indian Head cents from the Aurora Borealis Collection, cameo and deep cameo proof 3-cent nickels from the David Poole Collection, and toned Walking Liberty half dollars from the Dale Larsen Collection, and a variety of Bust and Seated Liberty halves are just some of the silver coins on tap for Day Two.
Some of the headlining copper, nickel, and silver coins from Day Two include an 1855 PCGS/CAC MS65+RD Braided Hair half cent, 1881 PCGS/CAC PR66/RDCAM Indian Head cent, 1866 PCGS PR67CAM 3 cent nickel, 1859 PCGS/CAC MS68+ Liberty Seated half dime, 1914 PCGS/CAC PR68 Barber dime, 1900-O PCGS/CAC-GOLD MS67+/GOLD Barber quarter, 1887 NGC/CAC-GOLD MS65 Liberty Seated half dollar, and 1883 PCGS/CAC PR67CAM Hawaii quarter. Among Thursday’s gold selections for are an 1878 PCGS/CAC PR63+DCAM Indian Princess Head $3 gold, 1871-CC PCGS/CAC AU58 Liberty Head $5 half eagle, and PCGS/CAC 1861-O Liberty Head $20 double eagle.
“The diverse nature of Thursday evening’s Regency Auction session has elicited a strong collector response,” said Greg Cohen, Senior Numismatist of Legend Auctions. “Whether you collect early type coins, 19th century proofs, rare date gold, or neat pattern coins, there is a wide range of coins at all price points. Collectors will have, in some cases, once in a decade (or more) opportunities to acquire great coins for their cabinets.”
While some may wonder how well the market will absorb all of these high-end rarities, other recent auctions have occurred with robust results. These include the Kagin’s sale at the American Numismatic Association National Money Show and Stack’s Bowers sale at the Whitman Expo, both in March. Meanwhile, the Stone Collection of Morgan silver dollars and other classic coins will be presented for sale at auction by Sotheby’s May 21, just a few days after the Regency Auction.
