Greysheet: DEALERS PREPARE FOR FINAL WHITMAN-BALTIMORE EXPO OF THE YEAR

The final Whitman Baltimore Expo of the year gets underway next week, signaling that the end of the year is not far away. It has been an eventful 2016, and we will have a thorough review as we get into the December issues. The Baltimore event is an opportunity for dealers and collectors to gather at a major show before the rush of the holiday season to conduct business and position for the new year.

Stacks-Bowers will conduct an auction of U.S. coins and currency over a total of twelve (12) floor and online-only sessions. The coin auction is anchored by a number of important collections. First up is the Part III of the Twin Leaf Collection of Large Cents, covering the years 1816 through 1856. This third offering of this collection provides enthusiasts with an opportunity to acquire a huge amount of different Newcomb varieties and die states.

The popular Rarities Night session contains a number of choice items, including two scarce early cents recently discovered in England, a run of condition-rarity Buffalo nickels, an MS67 1904-O Barber quarter, a Proof Like 1884-S Morgan dollar (NGC MS61PL), and a historically important 1861-D gold dollar. Lastly, a great grouping of Colonial coins will be offered in session seven, featuring the Carolina Colonial Collection and the Anderson-Gleckler Collection of Connecticut Coppers.

THIS WEEKS MARKET

Morgan Dollars: Readers will note more than a handful of prices increases in this series. While the rare coin market can at times be inefficient, in this case a couple large market makers in this series stepped up and posted sight seen bids on CDN Exchange (CDNX) over the past week, and we are happy to report them. Additionally, we have been asked if we consider “stair-stepping” when we lower or raise bids. Our answer has always been no. If we spread out lowering a price over two or three weeks, what happens to those who buy or sell that coin during those weeks? If we have the information we will report it. The coin market moves quickly and one does not have to look far to find some collector guides which list prices that have not been seen in years.

Mint State Type: Price movement in early half dollars and dollars as a result of our ongoing work on the upcoming Quarterly II issue.

State Quarters: New bid prices for “America the Beautiful” quarter rolls and updates to the silver proofs.
