IMPORTANT QUINTUPLE STELLA HIGHLIGHTS SALE

The Legend Rare Coin Auctions Regency XVII sale is less than a week away as of this writing, to be held on Thursday the 19th in New Orleans. This auction features 472 lots of everything from half cents to patterns. The clear headliner is the 1879 $20 Quintuple Stella gold pattern coin (Judd-1643). Graded PR64 Deep Cameo by PCGS, this metric pattern comes from the same family of the well known $4 Stellas. This example, one of five known, traces a pedigree of Virgil Brand-Amon Carter-Ed Trompeter-Bob Simpson, and carries an opening bid of $1.6 million. Both an Original and Restrike proof 1827/3 capped bust quarter is on offer, as well as an NGC MS63 1853 Liberty Seated dollar. For nickel specialists, there is a PCGS certified MS66 1937-D 3 Legged buffalo, a coin which has a combined population of just 28 submissions, along with an attractive gem 1925-S. Sticking with 20th century coinage, a blast white 1942/1-D Mercury dime graded PCGS/CAC MS-65FB is available, with an estimate in the neighborhood of $30,000. Looking at Morgan dollars, there are a handful of notable lots: an MS67 1888-S that has been approved by CAC, a coin with a population of just four at this grade level, an 1893-CC certified PCGS/CAC MS64+, and an 1894-O also graded PCGS/CAC MS64+. Finally a coin that should be mentioned is a colorful 1904 proof Barber quarter in the lofty grade of PR69, graded by NGC in an older style holder.
